Kitchen table. Late. The girls are asleep.
Elise is telling him about a patient from her shift. Something small. Something that bothered her more than it should have. Micah listens. Watches the way she rubs the bridge of her nose when she is tired. He realizes he is tracking exits. Windows. The driveway. Whether the porch light is on. He is not worried about anything in particular. He is worried about everything.
Elise notices him watching the window. “You okay?” she asks.
“Yeah,” he says. He means it. But the calculation never stops. If anything happens to her, the whole structure fails. Micah does not say that out loud.
He just gets up and checks the porch light before he makes her a cup of tea.
